In Jerusalem I was / At the break of dawn / I went roaming in the streets of the city / The arches in the old city are pitiful ribs, / A sad sun offers condolences to domes and minarets / With a sad kiss. / Life flows as if normal, / The gates are yawning, / The newspapers' seller paves the ground with news / Above the wall / Yelling high. / Damascus Gate provides the early comers with morning fruits / And the heart embraces wounds / bandaged with visions.

في القدس كنتُ / خرجت في جفن الصّباح أجوب أنحاء المدينة / وقناطر القدس القديمة كالضّلوع / وعلى القباب، على المآذن قبلة الشّمس الحزينة / تمضي الحياة كأنّها عاديّة / تتثاءب الأبواب / بيّاع الجرائد يرصف الأنباء فوق الأرض / فوق السّور / تزعق في الفضاء / باب العمود يعدّ للغادين فاكهة الصّباح / والقلب يحتضن الجراح / مضمّدات بالرّؤى.
